THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR THINKING

Evidence Before
Assumptions.

Explore the scientific studies and reference books informing how we examine the influence of pet care products, services and marketing on animals, humans and the relationships between them.

OUR PRINCIPLE

Better business decisions begin with a better understanding of the lives they influence.

A curated, evolving library of scientific research, including findings that challenge our assumptions.

RESEARCH-GROUNDED, NOT OVERCLAIMED

What the evidence supports.

Research documents risks associated with certain anthropomorphic practices, relationships between owner expectations and relinquishment, and the complex factors shaping companion animal wellbeing.

It also shows that anthropomorphic language can sometimes increase empathy and willingness to help animals. PCIF therefore examines the specific claim, practice and likely consequence, rather than treating all affection or human comparisons as harmful.

The current PCIF scoring weights and 80/100 classification threshold are PCIF-defined rules, not scientifically validated cutoffs. This library supports the framework's underlying questions, not proof that a specific brand caused abandonment.

Anthropomorphism and Its Adverse Effects on the Distress and Welfare of Companion Animals

Discusses welfare risks of some human-centered practices, including inappropriate clothing, diet and interactions. Also recognizes that some anthropomorphism can be beneficial.

What it does not establish: Review, not a causal study of advertising and abandonment.

Mangy Mutt or Furry Friend? Anthropomorphism Promotes Animal Welfare

Experiments found anthropomorphic framing increased participants' willingness to help dogs and their pro-animal attitudes.

What it does not establish: Important counterevidence: not all anthropomorphic language has negative effects.

Anthropomorphism and Anthropomorphic Selection: Beyond the Cute Response

Explores anthropomorphism, companion animal relationships and selection for human-preferred characteristics.

What it does not establish: Conceptual analysis; does not quantify the impact of individual pet brands.

Risk Factors for Relinquishment of Dogs to an Animal Shelter

Case-control study identifies factors associated with relinquishment, including inappropriate care expectations, elimination problems and gaps in care.

What it does not establish: Associations are not proof that pet-industry marketing caused relinquishment.

Risk Factors for Dog Relinquishment to a Los Angeles Municipal Animal Shelter

Reports the roles of costs, perceived household stress and awareness of support services in relinquishment decisions.

What it does not establish: Context-specific observational findings; do not generalize to every shelter.

Reasons for Relinquishment of Companion Animals in U.S. Animal Shelters: Selected Health and Personal Issues

Interviews across shelters documented diverse human circumstances behind surrender, supporting owner education and assistance.

What it does not establish: Shows relinquishment is multifactorial, not explained by one marketing practice.

Owner Characteristics and Interactions and the Prevalence of Canine Behaviour Problems

Examines associations between owner characteristics, interactions and canine behavior problems.

What it does not establish: Associational evidence, not a causal test of PCIF's proposed industry pathway.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

We evaluate influence.
We do not invent certainty.

PCIF is developing a measurable framework for responsible pet care commerce. As new evidence emerges, the framework and this library should evolve with it.
